Face Mask Fit Test

Is fit testing a requirement?

Furthermore, the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2017 S44 (3a) legislates that personal protective equipment (PPE) supplied be of a suitable size, fit and is comfortable to wear.

When should I be fit tested?

In accordance with the AS/NZS 1715:2009 fit testing of tight-fitting respirators should be conducted:

  • before wearing RPE for the first time to determine seal and suitability, then at least annually thereafter,
  • if the wearer’s facial features or characteristics have altered affecting the seal of the respirator for example after dental surgery or significant weight change etc.

Fit tests should also be performed if a new make, model or size respirator is required.

What’s required for a fit test?

  • You must be clean shaven (no stubble, goatees, beards etc) as per the AS/NZS 1715:2009 and ISO 16975-3 Standards. Fit tests will not be conducted if there is any facial hair crossing or interfering with the mask sealing surface.
  • You must not smoke, vape, eat (mints included) 30 minutes prior to the fit test.
  • Bring other Protective Product Equipment that is used such as your eyewear, earmuffs, and hard hat etc to ensure compatibility with your respirator.
  • Have medical clearance to wear a respirator.
